December is the most misread month on the travel calendar. Most people treat it as one thing Christmas, cold, expensive when it is really four separate seasons happening at once.
Southeast Asia’s dry season peaks. The Andes and Patagonia tip into summer. Egypt and Jordan finally cool to walking temperature. And across the Himalaya, the monsoon dust has long since settled out of the air, leaving the clearest mountain views of the year.
The destinations below are grouped by what you actually want out of the month, not by continent. Prices and conditions are current as of early September 2026; check anything time-sensitive against your travel dates.
Warm and dry: where December is peak season
Thailand Andaman coast
December is the driest, clearest stretch of Thailand’s year, and the Andaman side is where it lands hardest. Krabi, Koh Lanta and the Phi Phi islands sit under settled skies with flat morning seas.

The detail most roundups get wrong: Thailand’s two coasts run on opposite calendars. The Gulf islands Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao are coming out of their wet season in December and can still catch rain. If you have one week and want guaranteed sun, go west.
Book accommodation early. The last two weeks of December are the most expensive of the Thai year.
Sri Lanka south and west coasts
The southwest monsoon has cleared by December, and the coast from Bentota down to Mirissa moves into its best months. Blue whale season off Mirissa runs from roughly December to April.
The east coast, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay, is on the opposite schedule and is wet. Sri Lanka rewards picking a side.
Costa Rica Pacific side
December is the start of the dry season on the Pacific coast, and Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula come into settled weather while the Caribbean side stays green and wet. Wildlife concentrates around shrinking water sources, which makes December and January the easiest months to actually see things.
Christmas week fills up months ahead. Early December is the value window.
Oman
Daytime temperatures in Muscat sit in the mid-twenties Celsius through December, which is the difference between the Wahiba Sands being a memorable night and an unbearable one. Wadi swimming is comfortable. The mountain road up Jebel Shams is cold at the top and worth it.
Zanzibar
The short rains typically ease through late November into December, leaving hot, humid days and warm water. It pairs naturally with a northern Tanzania safari, where December is a good but not peak month.
Mexico Oaxaca
Dry, mild, and in the last week of December, genuinely unusual. On 23 December, Oaxaca City holds Noche de los Rábanos, the Night of the Radishes, where growers carve enormous radishes into nativity scenes and compete in the zócalo. It has run since 1897.
Clear skies and cold nights: the mountain and desert month
Nepal
December gives Nepal the clearest air of its year. The monsoon dust has washed out, the winter haze has not yet built up over the valleys, and the Himalaya sits sharp on the horizon from Kathmandu, Pokhara and every ridge in between. Photographers who can travel any month generally choose this one or its mirror in November.

The trade is temperature, not weather. Days are sunny and dry. Nights at altitude are properly cold, teahouses run on wood stoves, and high passes above roughly 5,000 metres carry snow risk and can close on short notice. Lower routes Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, the Kathmandu Valley rim stay comfortable and are close to empty compared with October.
Nepal is also asking people to come, and it is worth being straight about why.
On 26 August a glacial collapse on the China–Nepal border sent floods down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli. More than 1,100 people were killed and thousands remain missing. On 6 September a separate flood in Gorkha destroyed two bridges at Namrung, and the district administration suspended the Manaslu Circuit and the Larke Pass.
The damage is severe and it is also concentrated. Specific corridors are affected: Rasuwa and the standard Langtang approach, Ganesh Himal and Ruby Valley, and the Manaslu, Tsum Valley and Larke Pass routes. Everest, Annapurna, Mustang, Manang, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Dolpa and the far west were not damaged, according to the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal’s route advisory.
Nepal’s tourism minister, Khadak Raj Paudel, put out a video appeal on 1 September asking travellers not to cancel, with the line that a visit now is more than a holiday — it is support for a country in the middle of a disaster. The Nepal Tourism Board carried it under the tag #NepalCalling.
That appeal is not asking for charity or for anyone to walk into a hazard. It is a straightforward point about where tourism money lands. A guide from Solukhumbu, a porter from Gorkha, a lodge owner in Ghandruk most of them live in valleys the water never reached, and all of them lose a season if bookings stop nationwide because of images from a corridor two hundred kilometres away.

Egypt
December is when Luxor and Aswan become walkable. Daytime highs settle around the low twenties Celsius, after months where midday in the Valley of the Kings is punishing. Nights in the desert are cold.
It is peak season and priced accordingly, but the temperature difference from October is the entire experience.
Jordan
Petra in December is cool, quiet and occasionally wet the honest version, which most listicles skip. You will have the Siq closer to yourself than at any point in spring. Bring layers for Wadi Rum, where desert nights drop close to freezing.
Rajasthan, India
The best month of the Rajasthani year. Days in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur are clear and mild, the light is good all day, and the heat that makes the region unbearable from March onward is months away. Nights are cold enough for a jacket.
Patagonia and Argentina
December is early summer in the southern hemisphere. Torres del Paine and El Chaltén have long daylight, open trails and famous wind. Buenos Aires is hot and empty as the city starts leaving for the coast.
This is the highest-demand window in Patagonia. Refugio bookings in Torres del Paine go months in advance.
Winter on purpose: the December-only experiences
Finnish Lapland
Above the Arctic Circle the sun does not rise for weeks around the solstice, which sounds grim and is in fact the point a long blue twilight, aurora on clear nights, and snow that has actually settled by mid-December.
It is the most seasonally priced destination on this list. Christmas week costs multiples of early December for the same product.
Vienna, Prague and the Christmas market belt
Central European markets open in late November and mostly close on 24 December, which catches people out. The first two weeks of December are the sweet spot: markets running, crowds lighter, hotel rates below the New Year spike.
Japan
Kyoto’s autumn colour holds into the first days of December in the lower temple gardens, and then the country goes quiet until the New Year rush starts around the 28th. That middle stretch is one of the least crowded windows of the Japanese year, with clear cold weather and the best chance of seeing Fuji from Tokyo.
Best value: where December costs least
Vietnam
The south is dry and warm, the centre is coming out of its flood season, and the north is cold and misty around Sapa. Vietnam remains one of the cheapest countries in Asia to travel well in, and December avoids both the summer heat and the Tết price surge.
Georgia
Tbilisi in December is cold, cheap and largely tourist-free, with the Caucasus ski season starting at Gudauri. Flight prices from Europe are at their lowest.
Nepal, again
Worth naming twice, because on a cost-per-day basis Nepal is among the cheapest countries on this list. December is low season for trekking, which means teahouse space without booking, and guide and porter availability that October simply does not have.
How to choose in one line
Want guaranteed sun and swimming: Thailand’s Andaman coast, Sri Lanka’s south, Costa Rica’s Pacific. Want mountains and clarity: Nepal, Patagonia, Rajasthan. Want December to feel like December: Lapland, Vienna, Kyoto. Want the month to cost the least: Vietnam, Georgia, Nepal, Egypt outside Christmas week.
The one rule that applies everywhere: the last ten days of December price differently from the first twenty. If your dates are flexible, moving a trip one week earlier is usually the single largest saving available to you.
