The Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF), one of Nepal’s most prestigious film events, has officially kicked off its 22nd edition on May 28, 2025, with the theme “Fractured Voices, Reclaiming Narratives.” Running through June 1, this five-day festival is more than just a cinematic celebration, it’s a platform for diverse voices, bold stories, and visual journeys that span the globe.
Whether you’re a film enthusiast, a traveler interested in Nepali culture, or a local looking for inspiration, Kimff 2025 is an unmissable event that captures the spirit of Nepal’s mountainous soul and international artistic collaboration.
The Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival is not just about films. It’s a powerful cultural movement that aims to spotlight narratives often left unheard, stories from mountain communities, Indigenous voices, and people navigating personal and political terrains. Since its inception, Kimff has served as a unique platform connecting filmmakers, adventurers, academics, artists, and audiences from around the world.
This year, more than 65 films from 30 countries are being screened across notable venues in Thamel, including QFX Chhaya Center, Astrek Park, and GAA Hall.
Highlights of Kimff 2025
The festival begins with the Nepal premiere of “Between the Mountain and the Sky”, directed by Jeremy Power Regimbal. This powerful documentary follows CNN Hero Maggie Doyne and her journey of love, resilience, and purpose as she raises Nepali orphans while overcoming personal obstacles. A moving narrative grounded in the hills of Nepal is a must-watch!
This section is a proud showcase of contemporary Nepali storytelling. From social commentaries to artistic expressions rooted in local culture, the Nepal Panorama features both fiction and documentary films. Winners in this category will receive Rs. 100,000 for Best Documentary and Best Fiction, with an Audience Choice Award offering an additional Rs. 100,000.
In a nod to 70 years of Nepal-China diplomatic ties, this year features the Xizang Panorama – a curated selection of films from the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. These films explore shared experiences of cultural identity, mountain life, and resilience despite linguistic and societal differences.
