Ask ten trekking guides in Thamel and you’ll get four different answers. Ask the internet and you’ll get a hedge: “it depends on what you want to see.”
That’s true and useless. You came here for an answer, so here’s mine.
The most beautiful trek in Nepal is the Gokyo Lakes trek crossed via Renjo La Pass. I’ll make the case, tell you honestly what it costs you, and then give you the category winners because there are four other treks that beat Gokyo on specific things, and one of them might be your right answer.

The verdict: Gokyo Lakes via Renjo La
Plenty of treks in Nepal give you big mountains. Gokyo is the one that puts water in the frame.
Six glacial lakes sit strung along the valley between 4,700m and 5,000m. They’re a mineral turquoise that looks color-graded in photos and isn’t. The third lake laps against the village of Gokyo itself, so you wake up to it, eat breakfast next to it, and watch it change color through the day as clouds move over Cho Oyu.
Above the village, Gokyo Ri is the viewpoint everyone climbs. It’s excellent. But it isn’t the reason for my verdict.
The reason is Renjo La.
You climb the pass from the Gokyo side in the morning. For two hours it’s just rock and breath. Then you top out at roughly 5,360m and the eastern Himalaya opens in a single line: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, with the Gokyo lakes glowing below you and the Ngozumpa Glacier the longest in Nepal running gray down the valley.
Every trek in Nepal has a best moment. This is the best best-moment. Kala Patthar shows you Everest closer. Poon Hill shows you a sunrise with less effort. Nothing shows you this much, arranged this well, at once.
There’s a quieter argument too. The lakes are sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist tradition, and pilgrims come up for Janai Purnima each year. The valley holds a stillness the main EBC corridor lost a long time ago. Beauty is partly the absence of a queue.
What the verdict costs you read this before booking
I’d be selling you something if I stopped there. Gokyo via Renjo La has real costs:
The Lukla flight and everything that comes with it. Same gateway as EBC, same weather cancellations, same peak-season diversion to Ramechhap with a 1 AM start from Kathmandu. See our best time to trek in Nepal guide for how the seasons affect this.
Altitude, seriously. You sleep at 4,790m in Gokyo and cross a 5,360m pass. That requires the same careful acclimatization as EBC. This is not a shortcut trek. If it’s your first time above 4,000m, build in the extra acclimatization day at Namche and another at Machhermo, and check your insurance covers you above 5,000m many standard policies stop at 3,000m.
No base camp photo. Some people need to stand at Everest Base Camp. Gokyo doesn’t go there unless you extend over Cho La Pass and join the EBC trail, which turns a 12-day trek into a 16-day one. If the certificate moment matters to you, do that extension or do EBC proper.
Renjo La in winter is a different animal. Snow can make the pass genuinely hazardous from December onward. This verdict assumes autumn or spring.
The category winners: where I’d overrule my own verdict
Beauty splits into kinds. Four treks beat Gokyo at their kind.
Most beautiful landscape variety: Manaslu Circuit
Gokyo is one landscape perfected. Manaslu is six landscapes in sequence subtropical gorge, terraced hillside, pine forest, Tibetan-Buddhist highland, glacial basin, and the crossing of Larkya La. It’s what the Annapurna Circuit was before the road. It’s also a restricted area: you need a special permit and a registered guide, covered in our Manaslu Circuit guide.
Overrule Gokyo if: you rank variety and remoteness over any single view.

Most Beautiful Trek in Nepal
Most beautiful single arena: Annapurna Sanctuary (ABC)
The Sanctuary is a high glacial bowl walled by peaks on every side Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli. You stand at 4,130m inside a 360-degree amphitheater. Renjo La is a panorama you look out at; the Sanctuary is one you stand inside.
Overrule Gokyo if: you want to be surrounded rather than elevated or you want big-mountain beauty without going above 4,200m.
Most beautiful landscape you won’t believe is Nepal: Upper Mustang
Wind-carved ochre cliffs, cave monasteries, a walled medieval capital, and a high desert that belongs to the Tibetan plateau. No snow-peak drama; a completely different palette. It’s also the rare trek that’s best in monsoon, when the rest of Nepal is under cloud. Restricted permit required details in our Upper Mustang guide.
Overrule Gokyo if: you’ve already done a big-mountain trek, or desert and culture move you more than ice.
Most beauty per day of effort: Poon Hill
Four to five days, tops out at 3,210m, and the sunrise over Dhaulagiri and the Annapurnas is still one of the best views in the country. It shares the rhododendron forests that make the whole lower Annapurna region glow pink in March–April.
Overrule Gokyo if: you have under a week, you’re trekking with kids or beginners, or altitude is a concern. Our best beginner trek guide compares the short options.
Quick comparison
| Trek | Days | Max altitude | Beauty signature | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gokyo via Renjo La | 12–14 | 5,360m | Turquoise lakes + Everest panorama | Moderate |
| Manaslu Circuit | 14–16 | 5,106m | Landscape variety, remoteness | Low |
| Annapurna Sanctuary | 7–11 | 4,130m | 360° peak amphitheater | High |
| Upper Mustang | 12–14 | ~4,000m | Trans-Himalayan desert, caves | Low |
| Poon Hill | 4–5 | 3,210m | Sunrise panorama, rhododendrons | High |
The bottom line
If beauty is the deciding factor and you have two weeks and reasonable fitness: Gokyo via Renjo La. That’s the verdict and I’ll stand behind it.
If your two weeks are in July: Upper Mustang. If you have five days: Poon Hill. If you’ve done the Khumbu already: Manaslu.
And if you disagree with me after you’ve stood on Renjo La, come back and tell me. That’s a conversation I’d enjoy losing.
FAQ
Which is the most beautiful trek in Nepal?
The Gokyo Lakes trek via Renjo La Pass is the strongest single answer. It combines six turquoise glacial lakes, Nepal’s longest glacier, and a pass-top panorama of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu in one route, with fewer crowds than the main Everest Base Camp trail.
Is Gokyo more beautiful than Everest Base Camp?
For scenery, most trekkers who have done both say yes: Gokyo adds the lakes and the Renjo La panorama, while EBC offers the base camp itself and Kala Patthar’s closer Everest view. The Cho La Pass extension combines both routes in around 16 days.
Which Nepal trek has the most varied scenery?
The Manaslu Circuit. It climbs from subtropical river gorge through terraced farmland and alpine forest to Tibetan-Buddhist highlands and the glacial crossing of Larkya La, with far fewer trekkers than the Annapurna or Everest regions.
What is the most beautiful short trek in Nepal?
Poon Hill. In four to five days it delivers a sunrise panorama of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range from 3,210m, through rhododendron forests that bloom pink and red in March and April.
